This verdant hill is located 17km north of Komotini and 6km south of the border with Bulgaria. There are lookouts used in the WW2 there, not easily visible holes that soldiers were stationed with machine-guns, guarding the hill. The Nymphea Fort remains perfectly camouflaged for many years. It is the last Fort to the east of the “Metaxa Line” holding against the Nazi attackers. It was built between 1936-1941 at a strategic point on Kirzali-Komotini road. When you get inside you’ll feel the frozen air from the air ducts and then walk into a large corridor keeping the blue line on the wall at your right. The guided tour of the battles that took place there are moving. The narrow corridor reveals the 1,910-meter-long underground passageways.
On the first floor of the fort, which is also the only one allowed to visitors, there’s the Military Museum, with German and Greek military uniforms, photographs and weapons.
