The Straits of Nestos and the greater valley area, have evolved over the last few years into a really popular destination for alternative mountain activities and mountain extreme sports aficionados.
Canoe-Cayak: It is an excellent opportunity to canoe through the river straits, having a wonderful water-side view of the aesthetic forest, towering rocks and birdwatching. If you decide to “go for it” we would suggest to try going the whole distance, and going all the way from Stavroupolis to Toxotes village. The descent takes about 4 and a half hours, but don’t fret, there is a beautiful station where you can stop and rest midway, in Livera.
Rafting: If you would rather try rafting, you’ll have to go to Drama nearby, where you can raft in the Nestos Rapids. Alternative Activities advisors will take you all the way to the Platanovrysi Dam and will pick you up from Paranesti, where your rafting route ends. The Rapids are classifed between 2nd and 3rd degree difficulty and the route will take you around an hour and a half.
4Χ4: A 4×4 excursion allows you to experience unique roads and beautiful vistas on the Rhodope Mountain Range. Cross the incredible Chaidou Forest, visit the Pomak Villages (Pomakochoria), find secret waterfalls and magnificent stone bridges that withstood time.
Cycling: Most alternative activities companies have bikes available for rent, and there a regular cycling tours organized along Nestos riverbank, where there are several roads for mountain bikes.
Canyoning: For the more extreme visitors, you can try canyoning with the Riverland company in the Xeropotamos Canyon.
